Benches

Ideas to consider

  • Same type of bench through out or a mosaic of different styles?
  • Don Batemen bench?
  • Ease of maintenance
  • local wood, local craftsmen preferred ?
  • Arms and no arms – arms easier for older people to use to get in an out of
  • Back or no back or mix of both
  • how the bench is secured in the earth so it is not taken away
  • Plaques on benches – do we permit/encourage this?
  • position of benches in the pit
  • bench with a table
  • If someone wants to gift a bench? Michael Imison does I know. Ellis may as well
  • Budget / Grant funding/ gifts
  • Ben Loughrill – has wood mill huntingfield – has plants of beautiful wood to turn into simple plank bench. https://treecyclinguk.co.uk/
  • I am cutting down 15 oak from my wood this year (acute oak decline), welcome to have a plank or two.

Above and below tom west <t.west.esq@hotmail.co.uk> Douglas fir Benches made from the same wood from a tree on the Euston estate in Suffolk. The darker bench is scorched to give it this burnt finish. I have plenty of this same wood. It is renowned for its  outdoor longevity, so a good choice for your benches. I believe the scorched one sold for 450, and the other was 600 as it was much larger.  As discussed Iโ€™m more than happy to discuss budget options with you.

Andy Ish, works at a place called Heaven (outside Diss). Yes, it’s got a story attatched to it. He lives/works with a commune of woodworkers – many of them at various wood shows. Here’s some examples from him
