Cousin Berenice

Cousin Berenice visited East Lodge for the first time. Naturally we gravitated towards the sea, south cove to see sand martin’s and a disappearing coast. Wonderful to swim in the sea for the first time this year. I wouldn’t have done it on my own, the waves strong and I increasingly weak I notice.

We talked about our family, her daughters (Tilly, Daisy) the different land they have found to occupy and their future trajectory. A pleasure to remember those long dead who no one else would know, Claire, my mother, her mother. I see I left my washing up!

She reminded me of my past, how I was her pin up cousin, the London girl, smart and out there – i can hardly touch this person now. Our conversation often turned to material stuff, (her eyes easily finding furniture she remembered from Quebec Road or London) and I am left with a question what to do with my material stuff, all the letters, diaries carefully written over the years, saved, moved from place to place. Soon it will be time to assess these, taking up space. Perhaps I’ll have a bonfire.
