By contrast, rural areas are usually more socially homogenous and conservative. Their population typically combines long-established residents, suspicious of the ways of cities, coupled to what is sometimes described as ‘white flight’ by people seeking a more traditional and less diverse community. It is no surprise that in our region Norwich, Ipswich and Colchester tend to vote Labour, and the surrounding counties tend to vote Conservative. Bringing the two together is bound to be difficult.
